ISO 14000 is a series of standards providing the systematic structure required for the companies to take the potential environmental threats arising due to their activities under control with a proactive approach. It enables decreasing the production costs by enabling on-site separation of the waste products that may pollute the environment with practices minimizing environmental pollution and by decreasing energy and resource consumption with recovery of these wastes in a controlled manner.
The compliance of the organizations' environmental systems to the standards is certified by third party certification bodies. While the competence of the systems adopted in companies is revealed with this process, the companies also receive guidance for minimizing their activities’ negative impact on the environment.
