One of the most important challenges faced in the professional life today is to have a secure and healthy working environment. OHSAS 18001:2008 Occupational Health and Safety Standard is a standard issued by BSI (British Standards Institute). OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health and Safety Standard is defined with the cooperation of some of the national standards bodies and certification bodies unlike other international standards as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and it is not an ISO standard. OHSAS 18001 is a standard focused on the health and safety of the employees more than the reliability of the products and services.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Management System is a tool for companies to handle occupational health and safety issues and to solve them within the framework of a continuous improvement approach. In Turkey, OHS practices are generally associated with the use of personal protective equipments and perceived as unnecessary tasks that need to be performed. OHS Management System is an approach determining OHS risks, minimizing these risks, providing OHS training to the employees in line with the laws, and auditing, reviewing and documenting OHS activities with a preventive approach instead of a corrective approach prepared only to emergencies. This approach, in which the threats and risks are determined in a systematic and scientific manner and precautions are taken against these threats and risks in order to ensure a secure working environment by preventing all kinds of accidents and other impacts that may be harmful to the human health during the operations at the work place, is called Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
