Even though the retailers require private label product suppliers to comply with new global food safety standards that are constantly renewed and enhanced (BRC, IFS, SQF) as a prerequisite, large food producers generally prefer ISO 22000 more since it is based on more clear methods, in other words process approach. In order to meet this need of ISO 22000; sector giants Danone, Kraft, Unilever and Nestle known as G4 joined forces under the sponsorship of CIAA (The Confederation of Food and Drink Industries), and issued PAS 220 (Publicly Available Specification) that can be applied to all kinds of companies as a specification detailing prerequisite programs in 2008.
The structure of PAS 220 (Publicly Available Specification) is quite different than BRC and IFS standards. The requirements are not listed clause by clause and more general expressions are preferred within a plain text. PAS 220 is prepared as a guideline to detail how exactly the requirements of ISO 22000 prerequisite programs shall be applied in companies in order to remove the problem of unclarity.
